For my 2008 BFA Exhibition, I created a spiritual environment in an existing garden space outside the UCF Art Gallery. This installation consists of 78 raku ceramic vessels on copper tubing that gradually rise upwards as they approach an altar of ceramic and marble. Viewers are welcome to walk amongst the installation and meditate on their thoughts. I created this in response to my inner turmoil from culture shock I was experiencing coming back to the States after two months in Sierra Leone. I also wanted to erect an altar of stone like ancient societies have. These vessels contain prayers, concerns and frustrations that I have released from my mind and allowed to float up to my Maker.
Artist Statement
Here I have raised my Ebenezer.
Tongues of flames
have sung some melodious sonnet,
tuning my wandering heart.
Here it is--
fixed, binded, sealed--
ready for Home.
